Hello ! Just joined and already excited for the read through that is to begin in march... new at substack so I hope I'll be able to enjoy and follow everything there is to follow. I am French so you will have to forgive my sometimes approximative english
Hope to make some new pen friends who love Tolkien from everywhere around the globe
I can’t wait for these read-alongs to start, and I love the way you have them timed throughout the year. I’m a paid subscriber, so will I receive emails letting me know when we will discuss what we’ve read? I ve never done one or even been in a book club, so I’m not sure what to expect.
I started out 2025 by listening to the Andy Serkis narrated audiobooks of LotR (for the first time in my life!), and now I'm dedicating 2026 to a slow, mindful read with fellow online nerds. I couldn't be happier! <3
Hello! So glad to stumble upon this Tolkien community! I've read through the Hobbit and LOTR a few times, but largely avoided any deeper dives into his universe with the Silmarillion and other lore. I'm glad to have a community to read through it with. I just signed up for the annual package, and I'm very much looking forward to it!
It has been more than 50 years since I first read the Hobbit followed soon after by the Lord of the Rings. Since then I have reread both many times, but it has been some time since my last reading. The discovery of this Substack through Breanna’s Facebook posts has rekindled my desire to embark once again on the epic journey of Bilbo, Frodo, Gandalf, and the One Ring. I am excited to get started in March.
This will be my first read-through. I’m excited to see what transpires. I’ve read the whole legendary series over several times as a youth. And tried to keep up with Christopher’s 12 volumes. I fell behind when life’s unexpected trials shifted my life into chaos.
I have no idea what to expect and how you, Breanne, conduct this read-through. How do we get started? Where do we go to have to have a discussion ? Or is it like this, a post and responses as you can to each other’s post.
As you can see, I don’t know much about this.
I remember “chat rooms” on the University mainframes. Maybe this is like that? Instead of a local network of students, faculty, and staff of the university we have a world network of internet users. Now we even have Zoom! ( This can be troublesome for a person who works on call, 24/7). If you’re not there, you can read everyone’s posts and comment on them. But it’s after the fact and sometimes they get read and even answered, but not always.
Also what about translation of each other’s language? I guess that would be taken care of by Substack translator apps. Maybe I’ve got too many questions!
Forgive my ignorance. When I was a youth we went to the library and read the books and there were discussions you could come and join, if you were old enough!
My how times and technology has changed how we interact with others! It’s sometimes difficult to interact with a blinking cursor on a dark screen! And sometimes it isn’t easy to say what you are thinking in a way that others can understand you. In a timely manner. But you’ve done this several times already! I’m forgetting!! Thanks for reading and sharing what you think is the important things.

( I’m very much like “Sam”, I don’t know what to bring, so I bring everything and never willingly leave anything behind!)
Do you have a list of recommended nice hardcover with good illustrations and cheaper paper backs for The Hobbit and LOTR? I saw the rec. below for the Silmarillion. Can't wait to read all of these. Thanks!
I’m wondering if I can start reading the hobbit a little earlier I’m gonna read it alongside my adult nephew, who I gifted these books to Christmas, 2004. I’m excited to start. I just ordered hardback copies of all the books so I can notate and highlight all the goodies.
I am looking forward to this read-through. Not really sure how it’s all going to come together! First time and all. Especially being on the road a lot!
I found you on FaceBook, now here I am! I am beyond excited to read with the group!
I have a question about payment. When I paid for the year, it was in Euros. I live in the USA…Florida. Is that normal? I tried a couple different ways to get to the subscription but it was always in Euros.

Yay! The Hobbit in spring! The fall 2025 read-thru of LOTR was my first time reading along with this community. Looking forward to March!
Did…..we just become best friends? 😭
