“But an equally basic passion of mine ab initio was for myth (not allegory!) and for fairy-story, and above all for heroic legend on the brink of fairy-tale and history, of which there is far too little in the world (accessible to me) for my appetite.” - J.R.R. Tolkien, Letter 131
Happy Silmarillion Sunday!
We did it! This is officially the last post in our series of reading through The Silmarillion together. The past eight weeks have been full of excellent questions, deep discussions and beautiful community; it’s been such a gift to experience and we’re not done yet! Paid subscribers will continue to get full access to all of my Tolkien read-throughs (and I definitely have more of them planned, so stay tuned!).
But for now we’re going to move forward with our official wrap up post for the published Silmarillion. In this post we’re going to be deep-diving on the last two sections of the book: ‘The Akallebêth’ and ‘Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age’. We have a lot to talk about.
Let’s get into it.
