Hi! I’m sorry this is off-topic but my family wants to learn more about the various languages from Tolkien. Are there books you recommend for this area of study?

There's a book called The Languages of Tolkien by Atanielle Annyn Rowland which is a guide to all the languages that Tolkien created for Middle-earth!

I love Nienna 🩶 Such a good overview. Thank you Breanne! I appreciate the way Tolkien wrote the interaction between Gandalf and Frodo over Gollum, it’s stuck out to me more in my last few reads/listens.

I love how Tolkien understood the role of grief in everybody’s lives. We are all touched by grief and it makes so much sense that it was woven into the fabric of Arda. After reading the Silmarillion and learning about Nienna, the scenes where the Fellowship show mercy and pity mean so much more.

I wonder if Tolkien based Nienna on the sinful woman who, weeping, anointed Jesus' feet with oil, washed them with her tears, and wiped them with her hair (Luke 7:36-50). Just a thought.

Nienna has long been my favorite of the Valar, and I agree that that his choice to include the themes of pity and mercy in LOTR is a call back to her.

Thank you for another thoughtful and excellent piece!

Breanne! I've loved your instagram (Let's talk about Tolkien legendarium while walking your dog. I mean. How great is that?!) But I may love this even more! So well done. And such a timely post given the state of world lacking in pity and mercy. Thanks for this!
