I'll be reading my version illustrated by Alan Lee for the second time. And arriving today is Karen Wynn Fonstad's "The Atlas of Middle-Earth"!

ROP Galadriel is 4000 years old. LOTR Galadriel is 8000. I just think she's experiencing her midlife crisis in ROP. 😆

I read something Tolkien every night in bed, so I'll be joining on Sept 22 with my ebook!

Hi, would anyone recommend 'The Lord of the Rings: A Reader’s Companion' to read alongside the books?

Apologies that I've posted this irrelevance to the subject matter!

Thanks :)

I feel like you’re one of the few who actually acknowledges the fully-rounded version of Galadriel as opposed to shallowly shoving her into a box. Too many people have dismissed her as “just another girlboss” in ROP without understanding that her strength and pridefulness are an essential part of her character and that showing that side of her is essential to her story, so we can see her profession from commander of the northern armies to the lady of Lothlorien.

Agreed. There's a lot more nuance to her character. She's still grieving her brother and looking for revenge. She's a proud Noldor which leads to some arrogance, especially in Numenor. It's not a one-dimensional character at all.

Yeah, I've heard all the "just another girl boss" arguments and I'm sick of them, ha! Especially when Tolkien wrote her to be brash, rebellious and proud. If they have a problem with that, they can take it with the author 😂 So glad you enjoyed today's deep dive on Galadriel!

I would have been disappointed if ROP gave us Jackson’s Galadriel. If she had not grown at all during the thousands of years between Ages, it would feel wrong.

“Fans” can be so silly sometimes. “Give me superwoman Galadriel or I will pout!”

Totally agree. It would make no sense for Galadriel not to have changed and grown in the 3000 years between ROP and LOTR

Yes, I don't think stately, ethereal Galadriel would have worked well at all in a tv show format. I'm glad they're giving us more aspects of her character!

Is the read through going to go one chapter each week like last year?

As I shared in the post above, we’ll try to cover between 4-7 chapters a week. 🙂

I’m so excited for the read along!

I’ll be using a mix of book and audio book. I have the physical books but the copies I have the print is too small to be comfortable.

The only downside is that getting to the annexes is a pain or impossible, and that’s the one area of the books I’ve never read but want to explore further.

I'm going to be using a mix as well! Depending on how things go with this read-through, I may take a break over the holidays and dive into the Appendices in the new year!

One of my favorite explorations in a story is how a character became who we see in a later work. The exploration of such a complex woman is welcome!

Yes! I love a good backstory and I'm very much enjoying that aspect in The Rings of Power show.

This is amazing as I'm returning to Tolkien's written legendarium after a near 30 year absence!

Thanks again Breanne!
